What matters when choosing a board
1. VRM. Most budget boards run six virtual phases with two MOSFETs each. That is enough for entry-level and mid-range processors. Anything more demanding needs a board with 16, 18 or 24 MOSFETs.
2. Chipset. C612 is the acknowledged leader and the only one that uses the socket to the full. The 8-series desktop chipsets (H81, B85, Q87 and others, including the server C222) are a compromise: fewer modern ports and more that can go wrong, though a well-built board on one of them can still be a sound buy. The 5-series chipsets (P55, H55, HM55 and the like) are the bottom of the market: no USB 3.0 and no SATA III whatsoever, frequent software problems and a more awkward flashing procedure.
3. Memory channels. The platform supports quad-channel, but manufacturers do not always wire it up. Unless you are building on the tightest of budgets, do not give up the chance to double your memory bandwidth.
4. TPM 2.0. The module keeps encryption keys away from the processor and memory. Some anti-cheat systems and Windows 11 require it. It can only be fitted to boards that have a native TPM connector or a DEBUG/LPC header. The details are in our article on TPM 2.0 on Chinese X99 boards.
5. S3 sleep. Chinese boards rarely implement it properly. If sleep does not work on yours, hibernation is the practical way around it.
