Specs come from AMD product pages, motherboard CPU support lists and other open sources and may contain errors. Clocks for chips with Zen 4c cores are AMD's single base and boost figures. The search box also finds OPN codes, but our OPN lists are not exhaustive. Board labels are a summary; the motherboard maker's CPU support list has the final word.

Generations and how to tell them apart

AM5 (LGA 1718) replaced AM4 in 2022 and is AMD’s first mainstream desktop socket with the pins on the motherboard instead of the CPU. So far it has carried two CPU architectures, Zen 4 and Zen 5, in four families of chips:

  • Raphael (Zen 4, 2022–2026). The Ryzen 7000 series, the PRO 7×45 chips and the EPYC 4004. Each chip combines one or two 8-core CCDs made on 5 nm with a 6 nm I/O die that holds the memory controller, PCIe 5.0 and a small Radeon graphics core with 2 compute units. AMD kept adding Raphael models long after launch: the Ryzen 5 7400F, 7400 and 7500X3D in 2025 and the Ryzen 7 7700X3D and Ryzen 5 7500 in 2026.
  • Phoenix (Zen 4, 2024). The Ryzen 8000G and 8000F series and their PRO versions. These are laptop chips on a single 4 nm die, with much stronger Radeon 780M, 760M or 740M graphics, and on the 8700G, 8600G, 8700F and their PRO versions an NPU for AI tasks. The cheaper Ryzen 5 8500G and Ryzen 3 8300G use the smaller Phoenix 2 die, which mixes full Zen 4 cores with compact Zen 4c cores that run at lower clocks.
  • Granite Ridge (Zen 5, 2024–2026). The Ryzen 9000 series, the PRO 9000 chips and the EPYC 4005. The chips are built like Raphael, with the same 6 nm I/O die, but their CCDs carry Zen 5 cores and are made on 4 nm. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition is the first Ryzen with 3D V-Cache on both CCDs, 192 MB of L3 in total.
  • Gorgon Point (Zen 5, 2026). The Ryzen AI 400 desktop APUs (450G, 440G, 435G and their GE and PRO versions). Like Phoenix they are laptop dies, with Radeon 860M or 840M graphics and a 50 TOPS NPU. AMD sells them only for desktops from PC makers such as HP and Lenovo, with no boxed version.

The model number alone can mislead you. Watch for these:

  • Ryzen 8000 is not newer than Ryzen 7000 in the way the number suggests. It is the same Zen 4 architecture on a laptop die, with 16 MB of L3 cache instead of 32 MB and PCIe 4.0 instead of 5.0. The graphics card gets eight lanes on the 8700G, 8600G, 8700F and 8400F and only four on the 8500G and 8300G. That makes the 8400F and 8700F, which have no graphics at all, a weaker base for a gaming PC than a Ryzen 7000 chip with the same number of cores.
  • The Ryzen 5 7400 and PRO 7445 are cut-down Raphael chips with 16 MB of L3 cache, half of what the 7600 has.
  • The 12- and 16-core X3D chips (7900X3D, 7950X3D, 9900X3D, 9950X3D, PRO 9965X3D, EPYC 4484PX, 4584PX and 4585PX) have the extra cache on only one of their two CCDs. To send games to the cores with the cache, Windows needs AMD’s chipset driver installed and the Xbox Game Bar enabled, since the driver uses it to recognise games. The 9950X3D2 has it on both.
  • EPYC 4004 and 4005 use the same silicon as Ryzen 7000 and 9000, validated for servers, with support for ECC memory and server operating systems. Most have a Ryzen twin with the same cores, clocks, cache and TDP: the EPYC 4584PX, for example, is a Ryzen 9 7950X3D. The table shows the twin under the EPYC models that have one.

The letters after the number mean the following. X is the faster, more expensive version of a model, and a number without a letter is usually a cheaper 65 W version with lower clocks. X3D has 3D V-Cache, an extra 64 MB of L3 cache that helps a lot in games. G marks the APUs with strong graphics, GE a 35 W version of a G chip, and F a chip with the graphics switched off. PRO models are business versions for office PCs with extra management and security features. AMD lists the PRO 7000 and 9000 chips as locked: no multiplier overclocking, no Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and no EXPO memory profiles. The Ryzen 7000 X3D chips are locked too, although PBO and Curve Optimizer still work on them, while the regular (non-PRO) Ryzen 9000 X3D chips are fully unlocked.

Which boards take which CPU

AM5 is much simpler than AM4. AMD states that every AM5 motherboard is compatible with every AM5 processor, and its spec pages for the Ryzen 7000 and 9000 list every chipset from A620 to X870E. What differs is the BIOS and what the chipset adds:

Chipset Graphics slot M.2 from the CPU CPU overclocking USB4
X870E PCIe 5.0 PCIe 5.0 Yes Yes
X870 PCIe 5.0 PCIe 5.0 Yes Yes
X670E, B650E PCIe 5.0 PCIe 5.0 Yes Optional
X670 PCIe 4.0 (5.0 on some boards) PCIe 5.0 Yes Optional
B850 PCIe 4.0 (5.0 on some boards) PCIe 5.0 Yes Optional
B650 PCIe 4.0 PCIe 4.0 (5.0 on some boards) Yes Optional
B840, A620 PCIe 4.0 PCIe 4.0 No Optional
  • BIOS. A board can only start a CPU that its BIOS already knows. On the first 600-series boards the Ryzen 8000G needs a BIOS with AGESA 1.1.0.0 or newer, the Ryzen 9000 1.1.7.0 or newer (AMD recommended 1.2.0.0a for the full feature set), the 9800X3D 1.2.0.2a and the 9900X3D and 9950X3D 1.2.0.3a. Chips released later, such as the 9850X3D, 9950X3D2, 7700X3D and 7500, may need a recent BIOS even on 800-series boards. The board maker’s CPU support list names the first BIOS for each chip.
  • Updating without a supported CPU. If the BIOS is too old, you need either a CPU the board already supports or a board that can flash a BIOS from a USB stick with no CPU installed: USB BIOS FlashBack (ASUS), Q-Flash Plus (Gigabyte), Flash BIOS Button (MSI) or BIOS Flashback (ASRock). Many AM5 boards have it, even some A620 ones, but not all: the ASUS PRIME A620M-K and the MSI PRO A620M-E, for example, don’t.
  • A620 boards and fast chips. AMD requires A620 boards to handle only 65 W chips, with a socket power limit of 88 W. Some A620 boards are rated for 120 W chips or more, but on a basic one a faster processor may be held back under a long all-core load, and PBO isn’t available on A620. AMD expects little effect in games. The table marks every Ryzen above 65 W with a note, so check the board’s CPU support list for those.
  • APUs and PCIe slots. With a Ryzen 8000 or Ryzen AI 400 chip, the board’s PCIe 5.0 slots run at PCIe 4.0. With the 8500G or 8300G the graphics card gets four lanes, and depending on the board the first M.2 slot drops to two lanes or the second one stops working. Board makers list these limits in the manual.
  • EPYC and Ryzen AI 400 in a desktop board. EPYC 4004 and 4005 chips run on ordinary AM5 boards, and enthusiasts have overclocked them on X670E and B650E boards. ASUS lists most of them for its consumer B650 boards, while the MSI, ASRock and Gigabyte consumer boards we checked don’t list them. Use a board that lists the chip if you need ECC memory working. The Ryzen AI 400 are in a similar position: AMD lists every AM5 chipset for them, and a Ryzen AI 5 435G has run on a retail JGINYUE B850M board, but ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte and ASRock don’t list them yet.

Will it run well in my board?

  • Memory. AM5 takes only DDR5, so AM4 memory can’t be reused. AMD’s official speed with two sticks is DDR5-5200 for Ryzen 7000 and 8000 and DDR5-5600 for Ryzen 9000 and Ryzen AI 400; with four sticks it is DDR5-3600 for all of them. For Ryzen 7000, AMD has called DDR5-6000 the sweet spot. Unbuffered ECC memory works with Ryzen 7000 and 9000, including the non-PRO chips, if the board supports it; ASUS and ASRock list ECC support on some of their boards. With the Ryzen 8000 APUs it is less clear: AMD lists ECC for some models, such as the 8700G and all PRO versions, but not for others, such as the 8600G, so check the spec page of the exact chip.
  • The first start takes a while. A new AM5 system trains its memory on the first boot, which can take a long time with a black screen, and again after every BIOS update or memory change. Don’t switch it off. The Memory Context Restore option in the BIOS stops the board from retraining on every cold boot.
  • Temperatures. Ryzen 7000 and 9000 chips are designed to run up to 95 °C under full load (89 °C for the Ryzen 7000 X3D chips) and boost as far as the cooler allows. Reaching that limit in a stress test is normal and doesn’t harm the chip.
  • Coolers. AM5 kept AM4’s mounting holes and cooler height, so most AM4 coolers fit if they attach to the board’s own backplate. Coolers that need their own backplate don’t, because the AM5 backplate can’t be removed.
  • Used boards and chips. The socket pins are on the board now, so check a used board for bent pins. In 2023 some Ryzen 7000 X3D chips burned out because boards fed them too much SoC voltage with EXPO enabled; BIOSes with AGESA 1.0.0.7 or newer cap it at 1.3 V. In 2025 a number of Ryzen 9000 chips, mostly 9800X3Ds, failed, most of them on ASRock boards; ASRock lowered its current limits in BIOS 3.25 and in 2026 released a new BIOS on AGESA 1.3.0.0a, though some failure reports continued. Whatever the brand, update the board before you install a used X3D chip.

Which CPU to choose

  • For gaming: the Ryzen 7 9800X3D or the higher-clocked 9850X3D. A used Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the cheaper alternative, and the 7600X3D, 7500X3D and 7700X3D are budget X3D options where they are sold. The 12- and 16-core X3D chips make sense when you also need the cores for work.
  • For work: the 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X or 7950X. If you want server features and validated ECC memory support, the EPYC 4565P and 4564P are the same chips; the EPYC 4545P is the only 16-core AM5 chip rated at 65 W.
  • Best value: a six-core Ryzen 5 7600, 9600 or 7500F, which run on any AM5 board and keep PCIe 5.0. The 7500F has no graphics, so it needs a graphics card.
  • Without a graphics card: the Ryzen 7 8700G or Ryzen 5 8600G. Their Radeon 780M and 760M are the fastest integrated graphics on AM5 you can buy boxed, though in game tests the 780M still falls behind entry-level graphics cards such as the GTX 1650 and RX 6500 XT. The 2-CU graphics of the Ryzen 7000 and 9000 is enough for the desktop and video, not for games.
  • For an A620 board: a 65 W chip such as the Ryzen 5 7600, Ryzen 7 9700X or Ryzen 9 7900 avoids the power limit altogether.
  • Avoid as a gaming upgrade: the Ryzen 5 8400F and Ryzen 7 8700F, which have half the L3 cache and fewer, slower PCIe lanes than a 7500F or 7700, and the 8500G and 8300G if you plan to add a fast graphics card.

Coming from AM4? Every AM4 processor is listed in our AM4 CPU list; moving to AM5 means a new board and DDR5 memory, but most coolers can stay. AMD has committed to supporting AM5 through 2029.

Comparing with Intel? Its 12th to 14th generation Core, the rivals of Ryzen 7000 and the first Ryzen 9000 chips, are collected in our LGA1700 CPU list.
