AMD Socket AM4: The Complete CPU List

This AM4 CPU list covers every desktop processor AMD released for Socket AM4: the Bristol Ridge A-series and Athlon X4 chips that opened the socket in 2016, every Ryzen from the first 1000 series to the last Ryzen 5000 models of 2026, the Ryzen and Athlon APUs with integrated graphics, the X3D gaming chips, the business PRO versions and the OEM-only and regional parts. Use the filters to narrow it down by series, architecture, cores, graphics or TDP, or type a model number, a codename or the OPN code printed on the CPU into the search box. Each row also shows which motherboards the chip is limited to.

Specs come from AMD documents, motherboard CPU support lists and other open sources and may contain errors. A dash means there is no such value or we could not confirm it from two sources. The search box also finds OPN codes, but our OPN lists are not exhaustive. Board labels are a summary; the motherboard maker's CPU support list has the final word.

Generations and how to tell them apart

AM4 replaced two sockets at once: AM3+ with its FX processors (see our AM3 and AM3+ CPU list) and FM2+ with its APUs. Over ten years it carried five CPU architectures, and the architecture tells you more about a chip than its series number does.

  • Bristol Ridge (2016–2017). 28 nm Excavator cores with Radeon R5 or R7 graphics: the A6, A8, A10 and A12 9000 series and the Athlon X4 940, 950 and 970 with the graphics switched off. They are the last of AMD’s pre-Ryzen APUs, with the same Excavator cores as the Carrizo chips in our FM2 and FM2+ CPU list, and the slowest processors on AM4.
  • Zen (2017–2018). The Ryzen 1000 series (Summit Ridge), the Ryzen 3 2200G and Ryzen 5 2400G APUs (Raven Ridge) and the Athlon 200GE, 220GE and 240GE.
  • Zen+ (2018–2020). A 12 nm refresh with higher clocks and lower memory latency: the Ryzen 2000 series without a G (Pinnacle Ridge), the Ryzen 3 3200G and Ryzen 5 3400G APUs (Picasso), and the Ryzen 5 1600 AF and Ryzen 3 1200 AF.
  • Zen 2 (2019–2022). The Ryzen 3000 series without a G (Matisse), the first desktop chips with PCIe 4.0, and the Renoir APUs: Ryzen 4000G, plus the Ryzen 3 4100 and Ryzen 5 4500 with the graphics switched off.
  • Zen 3 (2020–2026). The Ryzen 5000 series (Vermeer), including the X3D models with stacked 3D V-Cache, and the Cezanne APUs: Ryzen 5000G, 5600GT and 5500GT, plus the Ryzen 5 5500 and Ryzen 7 5700 without graphics.

The series number doesn’t always match the architecture. Watch for these:

  • The 2200G and 2400G are Zen, not Zen+, and the 3200G and 3400G are Zen+, not Zen 2. AMD numbered its APUs one generation ahead of the CPUs they share cores with.
  • The Ryzen 5 5500 and Ryzen 7 5700 are not cut-down 5600 and 5700X chips. They are Cezanne APU dies with the graphics disabled: half the L3 cache (16 MB instead of 32 MB) and PCIe 3.0 only. The Ryzen 3 4100 and Ryzen 5 4500 are the same story on a Renoir die, with just 4 or 8 MB of L3. None of them has working graphics, so they all need a graphics card.
  • The Ryzen 5 1600 AF and Ryzen 3 1200 AF are Zen+ chips sold under the old names. The AF in the part number (YD1600BBAFBOX, YD1200BBAFBOX) is the only way to tell them from the original 14 nm chips.

The letters after the number mean the following. X is the faster, more expensive version of a model, and XT marks later refreshes such as the 3600XT or 5800XT. The 5600T and 5600XT are 2024 versions of the Ryzen 5 5600 with higher boost clocks. G marks integrated graphics, GE a 35 W version of a G chip and E a 45 W version of a CPU without graphics. X3D has 96 MB of L3 cache, which helps a lot in games. PRO models are business versions for office PCs with extra management and security features, and the PRO APUs also support ECC memory. AMD doesn’t list PRO chips as unlocked, though some of them, such as the PRO 4750G, do overclock in practice. The Ryzen 5 5600F (2025) and 5500F (2026) are late budget models with a low 3.0 GHz base clock and no graphics; the 5500F has 16 MB of L3 but keeps PCIe 4.0. In the OPN, a box code ending in WOF means the chip comes without a cooler.

Which boards take which CPU

Every AM4 processor physically fits every AM4 board, but that doesn’t mean it will start. Whether it does depends on the chipset and, even more, on the BIOS. This table follows AMD’s own chipset chart and the motherboard makers’ CPU support lists, which in a few cells disagree with each other:

CPU A320, B350, X370 B450, X470 X570 B550, A520
A-series 9000, Athlon X4 (Bristol Ridge) Yes, but removed from many later BIOSes Some boards No No

  • Ryzen 5000 on 300-series boards. AMD opened Ryzen 5000 to A320, B350 and X370 in March 2022 but left it to each board maker. Many boards got a BIOS on AGESA 1.2.0.6b or 1.2.0.7 from April that year; cheap and rare ones often didn’t. The 5000G APUs need 1.2.0.7.
  • Small BIOS chips. Most AM4 boards have a 16 MB BIOS chip, which can’t hold code for every AM4 processor. To add new CPUs, board makers removed old ones: many 300-series boards dropped Bristol Ridge with their Ryzen 3000 or Ryzen 5000 BIOS, and some 400-series BIOSes for Ryzen 5000 warn against using Ryzen 1000, 2000 or Raven Ridge chips. Read the BIOS notes before you flash, especially on a board that already runs the CPU you plan to keep. MSI’s MAX boards, such as the B450 Tomahawk MAX, have a 32 MB chip and run Ryzen 3000 out of the box.
  • Updating without a supported CPU. An older board can’t start a newer processor until its BIOS is updated, and for that it needs a CPU it already supports. The exception is boards that can flash a BIOS from a USB stick with no CPU installed. Board makers call it USB BIOS FlashBack (ASUS), Q-Flash Plus (Gigabyte), Flash BIOS Button (MSI) or BIOS Flashback (ASRock), and many cheap boards don’t have it.

Will it run in my board?

  • Power stages. A board that lists a chip can still struggle with it. The cheapest A320 and B350 boards have weak power stages, and a 12- or 16-core Ryzen 9 or a 105 W chip under a long all-core load can make them overheat and throttle. It depends on the board model, not on the chipset, so look up a review of your board before putting a Ryzen 9 or an X3D chip in it.
  • PCIe. PCIe 4.0 needs two things: a Matisse or Vermeer CPU, that is a Ryzen 3000 or 5000 that isn’t an APU and isn’t the 5500 or 5700, and an X570 or B550 board. On B550 only the graphics slot and the first M.2 slot, which are wired to the CPU, run at 4.0; A520 and the 300- and 400-series are PCIe 3.0. Renoir and Cezanne chips, with or without graphics, give the graphics card 16 lanes of PCIe 3.0. The Raven Ridge, Picasso and Bristol Ridge APUs give it only eight, and board makers list the Athlons with Radeon graphics at four. With a mid-range card, x8 rarely matters, but x4 can noticeably slow a faster one.
  • Memory. AM4 takes only DDR4. The officially supported speed rises with the generation: DDR4-2400 for Bristol Ridge, 2666 for Ryzen 1000, 2933 for Ryzen 2000 and the 2000G, 3200 for Ryzen 3000, Ryzen 5000 and the 5000G. Ryzen performs best when the memory and the Infinity Fabric run at the same clock, which on Ryzen 3000 usually works up to about 1800 MHz, or DDR4-3600; AMD itself recommended DDR4-3600 CL16 for these chips. Unbuffered ECC memory works with the Ryzen 1000, 2000, 3000 and 5000 chips built without graphics (so not the 4100, 4500, 5500 or 5700) if the board supports it; AMD’s current spec pages list ECC as supported with a compatible board. Among the APUs, board makers list ECC support only for the PRO versions.
  • Overclocking. Boards with A320 and A520 chipsets can’t overclock the CPU, though most still run memory above its rated speed. B350, X370, B450, X470, B550 and X570 can, and every regular Ryzen has an unlocked multiplier. The exceptions are the X3D chips, whose multiplier and core voltage are locked (memory and Infinity Fabric overclocking still work, and later BIOSes on some boards added undervolting through Curve Optimizer), and the Athlon 200GE, 220GE and 240GE. AMD lists the PRO versions as locked too. The Athlon 3000G is unlocked.

Which CPU to choose

  • For gaming: the Ryzen 7 5800X3D or 5700X3D. They are the fastest AM4 chips in most games. AMD brought the 5800X3D back in June 2026 as a 10th Anniversary Edition. Neither comes with a cooler, and the 105 W rating needs a good one.
  • For work: the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X or the 12-core 5900X, on a board with a solid power stage. The 5900XT is a 16-core chip with lower clocks than the 5950X.
  • Best value: the Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700X. They need no special cooling and run on any 400- or 500-series board with a current BIOS.
  • Without a graphics card: the Ryzen 7 5700G or Ryzen 5 5600G, or the newer 5600GT. Their PRO versions are cheap used and add ECC memory support.
  • For a 300-series board that never got a 2022 BIOS: a Ryzen 7 2700, Ryzen 5 2600 or 1600 AF, or a 3400G if you need graphics. Boards older than these chips still need a BIOS update for them, but a 2018–2019 one rather than the 2022 BIOS Ryzen 5000 requires.
  • Avoid as an upgrade: the Bristol Ridge A-series and Athlon X4, which are slower than any Ryzen, and the Ryzen 5 5500 if you planned to use a PCIe 4.0 graphics card or SSD at full speed.

AM4’s successor, AM5, takes only DDR5 memory, so moving to it means a new board and new memory; most AM4 coolers fit it. All AM5 processors are listed in our AM5 CPU list.

FAQ

Will a Ryzen 5000 work in a B350 or A320 board?

Often yes, but only if the board maker released a BIOS for it, usually on AGESA 1.2.0.6b or 1.2.0.7 from 2022. Look for your board on the maker’s site: if the CPU support list includes the chip you want, update the BIOS with your old CPU still installed, then swap. If your board never got that BIOS, its CPU support list shows the newest chip it does take; AMD doesn’t support even the Ryzen 3000 without a G on A320, though some boards list it.

Which AM4 processors does Windows 11 support?

Microsoft’s list includes the Ryzen 2000 without a G and every newer Ryzen, including the 3000G APUs, plus the Athlon 3000G, 300GE and Gold 3150G. Chips released later, such as the 5600GT or 5700X3D, aren’t named but are covered by Microsoft’s note that later processors meeting the same requirements count as supported. Ryzen 1000, the 2200G and 2400G, the Athlon 200GE, 220GE and 240GE and the Bristol Ridge chips are not on it, and neither is the 1600 AF, even though it is a Zen+ chip. They still run Windows 11 if you bypass the hardware check. If Windows stutters for a moment from time to time on an AM4 system with the firmware TPM enabled, update to a BIOS with AGESA 1.2.0.7 or newer, which fixed the fTPM stutter.
