Specs come from AMD documents, motherboard CPU support lists and other open sources and may contain errors. AMD sometimes sold one model number in several TDP versions or on different dies, so check the OPN code printed on the CPU before buying. The search box also finds OPN codes, but our OPN lists are not exhaustive.

AM3 vs AM3+: what fits where

AM3 arrived in February 2009 with the Phenom II, and the Athlon II and Sempron 100 series followed later that year. These chips have 938 pins and a memory controller that handles both DDR2 and DDR3: in an AM3 board they run DDR3, and in an older AM2+ board with a suitable BIOS they run DDR2. AM3+ came out in 2011 for the FX processors. Its socket is black, has 942 contacts and slightly larger holes, and takes both AM3+ and AM3 chips. FX processors have 940 pins and a DDR3-only memory controller.

CPU AM2+ board AM3 board AM3+ board
AM2 / AM2+ (Athlon 64, Phenom, Phenom II X4 920/940) Yes No No
AM3 (Phenom II, Athlon II, Sempron 100 series, Opteron 1381–1389) With a BIOS update, on DDR2 Yes Yes
AM3+ (FX, Opteron 3200/3300) No Only boards whose CPU support list includes FX Yes (FX-9370 and 9590 only on listed boards)

An AM3 chip in an AM3+ board is the easy case and works as intended. The tricky one is FX in an AM3 board. When FX was coming out, board makers updated some of their 800- and 700-series boards for it: Gigabyte released rev. 3.1 versions of several boards with the black AM3+ socket, and ASRock and others added FX through BIOS updates. Boards like these may not show the CPU temperature correctly, so the CPU fan can run at full speed, and some power-saving features may not work. Whether an FX runs in a particular AM3 board depends entirely on that board’s CPU support list, so check it for your exact model and revision.

Cores and how to tell them apart

The two sockets cover two very different generations. AM3 chips use the 45 nm K10 architecture, the same as the first Phenom IIs, the AM2+-only X4 920 and 940. AM3+ adds the 32 nm Bulldozer and Piledriver chips, which group cores into modules.

  • Deneb. The full four-core K10 die with 6 MB of L3: most of the Phenom II X4 900 series, the Business Class B9x and the Opteron 1381, 1385 and 1389 (Suzuka). The Phenom II X4 805, 810 and 820 have only 4 MB of L3 enabled.
  • Heka and Callisto. A Deneb with one or two cores switched off, keeping the 6 MB of L3: the Phenom II X3 and X2.
  • Thuban. The six-core Phenom II X6, the first desktop AMD chip with Turbo CORE: when at least three cores are idle, the busy ones run 400–500 MHz faster.
  • Zosma. A Thuban with two cores switched off, sold as the Phenom II X4 960T, 840T and 650T. It keeps Turbo CORE.
  • Propus, Rana and Regor. The Athlon II X4, X3 and X2. None of them has L3 cache, which makes them slower than a Phenom II at the same clock. Regor is a native dual-core die with up to 2 × 1 MB of L2, also sold as the OEM Phenom II X2 511 and 521 and the Sempron X2. The Phenom II X4 840 and 850 are Propus chips too, despite the name.
  • Sargas. A single-core Regor: the Sempron 130 to 150 and the 20 W Athlon II 160u and 170u.
  • Zambezi (Bulldozer). The first FX chips from 2011–2012, from the FX-4100 to the FX-8150, plus the Opteron 3200 (Zurich).
  • Vishera (Piledriver). The improved FX x300 series from late 2012 (FX-4300 to FX-9590), with higher clocks and better performance per clock, plus the Opteron 3300 (Delhi).

In an FX chip, each module has two integer cores that share the instruction front end, the floating-point unit and 2 MB of L2 cache. An “eight-core” FX-8350 is four modules, and in heavily threaded work it doesn’t scale like eight full cores. In 2019 AMD paid $12.1 million to settle a US class action over counting each module as two cores. The first FX chips were often no faster than a Phenom II X6 and slower per core. Vishera closed much of that gap, so given the choice, take an FX with a model number in the x300 range.

The model number alone doesn’t always tell the whole story. The Phenom II X4 945 and 955 exist in 95 W and 125 W versions, the 965 Black Edition started out at 140 W (C2 stepping) and was later sold at 125 W (C3), and the FX-8120 came in 95 W and 125 W versions. The OPN code on the heat spreader tells them apart: type it into the search box above to find the exact row.

Core unlocking

Many cheaper AM3 chips are bigger dies with cores switched off, and on some of them those cores can be switched back on. Boards with the SB710 or SB750 southbridge do it through AMD’s Advanced Clock Calibration (ACC) option in the BIOS, and many SB850 boards through the maker’s own option, such as ASUS Core Unlocker. The usual candidates:

  • Phenom II X2 (Callisto) and X3 (Heka) to a four-core Phenom II X4;
  • Athlon II X3 to an Athlon II X4;
  • Sempron 140, 145 and 150 to a dual-core;
  • Zosma chips such as the Phenom II X4 960T to a six-core;
  • reportedly also some Athlon II X2 210e, 215 and 220 and the rare E0 Athlon II X4 640, which are built on bigger dies.

It’s a lottery. Some chips unlock and run stable, some unlock but crash, and some won’t unlock at all, because the cores were switched off for a reason. If an unlocked chip passes a long stress test, you got a free upgrade; if not, switch the option off and the chip runs as sold. Candidates are marked in the table, and the “May unlock extra cores” filter lists them.

Will it run in my board?

  • BIOS. Every CPU newer than the board needs a BIOS that knows it. The board maker’s CPU support list is the best guide.
  • Power. Many budget boards are rated only for 95 W processors. 125 W chips such as the FX-8350, 8370, 8320, 8150, 6350 and 4350, the Phenom II X6 1090T and 1100T and the Phenom II X4 965, 970, 975 and 980 need a board rated for them, and the 140 W C2 version of the 965 even more so. The FX-9370 and FX-9590 are 220 W chips that only run on boards their makers have listed for them, usually with a BIOS update. If the support list doesn’t name a CPU, take a 95 W model.
  • Memory. AM3 processors officially run up to DDR3-1333 in AM3 boards, and early C2-stepping Phenom IIs drop to DDR3-1066 with two DIMMs per channel. FX processors officially support up to DDR3-1866.
  • Chipset. The AMD 970, 990X and 990FX boards were built for FX. Boards with 700- and 800-series chipsets run AM3 chips within their power rating and BIOS support.
  • Opteron. The Opteron 1381–1389, 3200 and 3300 are single-socket server versions of the Phenom II and FX. They run in desktop boards whose CPU support list includes them. The Opteron 3200 and 3300 are officially validated for unbuffered ECC memory, if the board supports it.

Which CPU to choose

  • AM3+ board: an eight-core Vishera. The FX-8350 and FX-8370 if the board can handle 125 W, otherwise the 95 W FX-8300, FX-8310, FX-8320E or FX-8370E. They differ mainly in clock speed, and every FX has an unlocked multiplier. The FX-6300 is a cheaper six-core and the FX-4300 the minimum worth buying. Zambezi chips only make sense if they’re much cheaper.
  • AM3 board without FX support: a Phenom II X6 1090T or 1100T Black Edition if the board takes 125 W, otherwise the 95 W X6 1035T or 1045T, or the 95 W version of the 1055T. For fewer threads but higher clocks, the Phenom II X4 965, 970, 975 or 980 Black Edition.
  • AM2+ board with AM3 support: the same Phenom II choices, within the board’s power rating. Our AM2 and AM2+ CPU list explains which of these boards take AM3 chips.
  • Budget and low power: the Athlon II X4 640 or 645 for little money, the 45 W Athlon II X4 610e, 615e or 620e, or the 25 W Athlon II X2 250u to 270u for a quiet small machine.
  • For tinkering: a Phenom II X2 555 or 560 Black Edition, an X3 720 Black Edition, an Athlon II X3 or a Phenom II X4 960T, on a board with core unlocking.
  • Sempron: only for getting an old board running. A used Athlon II X2 or X4 costs about the same.

FAQ

Can an AM3 CPU go in an AM2+ board?

Often, yes. AM3 processors fit the AM2+ socket and run on DDR2, but the board needs a BIOS that supports them, so check its CPU support list. FX processors don’t work in AM2 or AM2+ boards.

Can an FX processor run in an AM3 board?

Only in boards whose maker added FX support, usually through a BIOS update or a board revision with the black AM3+ socket. Phenom II, Athlon II and Sempron chips run in practically every AM3+ board.

Which Windows runs on Socket AM3 and AM3+?

Every CPU in the list runs 64-bit Windows 10, though Microsoft ended its support in October 2025. Windows 11 doesn’t officially support any of them. From version 24H2 it won’t even start on Phenom II, Athlon II and Sempron chips, because it requires SSE4.2, which K10 doesn’t have. FX chips have SSE4.2, so they can run Windows 11 if you bypass Microsoft’s hardware checks. Most Linux distributions run on all of them. The exceptions are distributions built for x86-64-v2, such as RHEL 9 and its clones or openSUSE Leap 16, which need SSE4.2 and so exclude every AM3 chip, and RHEL 10 and Rocky Linux 10, which need AVX2 and so exclude FX as well.
