FM2 vs FM2+: what fits where

FM2 arrived in October 2012 with the Trinity APUs, and Richland followed in 2013 on the same socket. FM2+ boards appeared at the end of 2013, and the first FM2+ processors, Kaveri, followed in January 2014. FM2 has 904 contacts and FM2+ has 906, and the two extra pins are what keep an FM2+ processor out of an FM2 board. The other way round works: FM2+ boards take FM2 chips, as long as the BIOS supports them. Both sockets use dual-channel DDR3 and the same cooler mounting as AM3.

CPU FM2 board FM2+ board
FM2 (Trinity, Richland) Yes, Richland may need a BIOS update Yes, with PCIe 2.0
FM2+ (Kaveri, Godavari) No Yes, with PCIe 3.0
FM2+ (Carrizo) No Only boards whose CPU support list includes it

The socket alone doesn’t decide the PCIe version. Kaveri and Godavari chips give the graphics slot PCIe 3.0, but only in an FM2+ board. Trinity and Richland run it at PCIe 2.0 in any board, and Carrizo gives only eight PCIe 3.0 lanes. For a mid-range graphics card that difference is small, so it shouldn’t decide the purchase.

Generations and how to tell them apart

All of these chips are built from modules: two integer cores share a floating-point unit and the L2 cache. A four-core APU is two modules, a dual-core is one.

  • Trinity (2012). 32 nm Piledriver cores, the same as in the FX-8350, with Radeon HD 7000D graphics: the A4-5300 to the A10-5800K, the Athlon X4 740 and 750K and the FirePro A300 and A320 workstation APUs.
  • Richland (2013–2014). The same die at higher clocks, with Radeon HD 8000D graphics: the A4-6300 to the A10-6800K, plus the late A4-7300 and the A4-4000 and A4-4020. The A10-6700T and A8-6500T are the only 45 W FM2 chips.
  • Kaveri (2014–2015). 28 nm Steamroller cores, which do more per clock than Piledriver, and the much stronger GCN graphics sold as Radeon R5 and R7. The A10-7850K, A10-7800 and A8-7600 are typical. The A10-7800, A8-7600 and A6-7400K can be set to run at 45 W instead of 65 W, and so can the Godavari A10-7860K.
  • Godavari (2015–2016). A new stepping of the Kaveri die with higher clocks: the A10-7870K and A10-7890K, the A8-7670K and the A10-7860K, an unlocked 65 W chip. Many OEM and PRO models with numbers in the 8000s use it too.
  • Carrizo (2016–2018). Laptop Excavator dies put into the FM2+ package: the Athlon X4 835 and 845, the A8-7680 and the A6-7480. Excavator has only 1 MB of L2 per module, but more instruction set extensions, including AVX2. The same Excavator cores went into the Bristol Ridge APUs for Socket AM4, which replaced FM2+; they are in our AM4 CPU list.

The Athlon X2 and X4 and the Sempron X2 are APU dies with the graphics switched off, so they need a graphics card. Their cores are the same as in the A-series chips of the same generation. The FX-670K and FX-770K were sold only in OEM PCs. Models with a B at the end or PRO in the name are business versions for office PCs, which AMD promised to keep available longer. Their specs are close to the regular models, but the B versions of K chips have a locked multiplier.

Integrated graphics and memory

Most people pick an APU for its graphics, and that is where the generations differ most. Kaveri and Godavari use GCN, the same architecture as AMD’s graphics cards from the same years. Trinity and Richland use the older VLIW4 design, which doesn’t support Vulkan and hasn’t had a driver update since early 2016: the last official Windows drivers for it are Catalyst 15.7.1 and the Crimson 16.2.1 beta. The GCN APUs got drivers until Adrenalin 21.5.2 in 2021.

The integrated graphics share system memory, so memory speed matters almost as much as the APU model. Run two modules in dual channel, never one. Officially Kaveri and Godavari quad-cores support DDR3-2133, most Trinity and Richland chips DDR3-1866 and the A4 models DDR3-1600 or less.

AMD Dual Graphics lets an APU work together with a low-end Radeon card. On Kaveri it officially works only with the R7 240 and R7 250, and like other multi-GPU setups it often stutters. Any modern budget graphics card is the better upgrade.

Chipsets and boards

Chipset Socket SATA 6 Gb/s USB 3.0
A55 / A58 FM2 / FM2+ none (SATA 3 Gb/s only) none
A68H FM2+ 4 2
A75 / A78 FM2 / FM2+ 6 4
A85X / A88X FM2 / FM2+ 8 4

Many boards add extra USB 3.0 ports through their own controllers, so check the board itself. Overclocking depends on the board too. Many cheap boards let you change the multiplier, but they often lack CPU voltage control and sturdy power stages, so for a serious overclock look at A85X and A88X boards.

  • BIOS. Every CPU newer than the board needs a BIOS that knows it. An FM2 board from 2012 needs an update for Richland, and Carrizo works only on boards whose maker added it in a late BIOS. The board maker’s CPU support list is the best guide.
  • Power. The fastest chips are rated at 100 W on FM2 and 95 W on FM2+. Most boards officially support them, but the power stages of cheap and small boards are basic and run hot with a K model, especially an overclocked one. Check the CPU support list before buying.

Which CPU to choose

  • FM2+ board, playing on the integrated graphics: the A10-7870K or A10-7890K if the board handles 95 W, otherwise the 65 W A10-7860K or A10-7800. The A8-7600 is the cheaper option with weaker graphics.
  • FM2+ board with a graphics card: an Athlon X4 860K, 870K or 880K. They have the same cores as the A10 with the graphics switched off, an unlocked multiplier and a full PCIe 3.0 x16 slot, and usually cost less than an A10.
  • FM2 board: the A10-6800K or A10-6790K, or the 65 W A10-6700. With a graphics card, an Athlon X4 760K or 750K. An FM2 board can’t take Kaveri, so if you plan to keep upgrading, an FM2+ board is the better buy.
  • Low power: the 45 W A10-6700T or A8-6500T on FM2, or an A10-7860K, A10-7800 or A8-7600 set to 45 W in the BIOS of an FM2+ board.
  • Carrizo: the Athlon X4 845 is a decent chip, but buy it only for a board whose support list includes it. Otherwise it may not even start.
  • Dual-cores: the A4, A6, Athlon X2 and Sempron X2 are only good for getting an old board running. A used quad-core costs little more.

FAQ

Can an FM2+ CPU go in an FM2 board?

No. FM2+ processors have two pins more than the FM2 socket has holes, so Kaveri, Godavari and Carrizo chips don’t fit. FM2 processors do work in FM2+ boards.

What is the difference between an Athlon X4 and an A10?

An Athlon X4 is the same chip with the graphics switched off. With a graphics card in the system an Athlon X4 860K performs like an A10-7850K, which runs at the same clocks, and the Athlon usually costs less. Without a graphics card it won’t give you a picture.

Which Windows runs on FM2 and FM2+?

Every CPU in the list runs 64-bit Windows 10, though Microsoft ended its support in October 2025. None of them is on Microsoft’s list of processors supported by Windows 11, but they all have the SSE4.2 and POPCNT instructions that version 24H2 requires, so Windows 11 runs if you bypass Microsoft’s hardware checks. Linux runs on all of them, except distributions built for x86-64-v3, such as RHEL 10 and Rocky Linux 10, which need AVX2. Only the Carrizo chips have AVX2.
